About the Book:

Rest(less) documents the sleep attempts of two middle-aged bed companions through a long, interrupted night.  Two sleep “narratives” are stitched that trace the progression of the couple through multiple sleepings and wakings, their trials contrasted with a consistent, restful sleep-wave pattern.  Utilizing the quilted cover and lining of a well-used pillow as its base materials, the book stands not only as a narrative of a particular episode but incorporates the physical and psychic traces of many restless nights.

My beloved husband often encourages and appreciates my artwork, but this was the first piece that he contributed the materials for.  I appreciate how many indexical signs were embedded in his pillow - and that I had been nearby the creation of them!

About the Materials and Processes:

Rest(less) is built primarily from a used pillow: the covers are made from book board covered with the shell of the pillow, while the lining of the pillow became the book’s pages, with a substrate of Arches Cover paper.  I utilized the machine-quilted wave pattern from the original lining and stitched over it with embroidery thread; the two narrative lines are also stitched with embroidery thread.  The book is bound with embroidery thread in a Japanese stab binding style.
