The Delight of Making Books

I have taught book arts workshops for more than 20 years, sharing the delights of artist’s books with children, teens and adults.  Although it is always a treat to work with experienced bookbinders, some of my favorite moments have come when a small student who had struggled to hold their needle or fold their paper would complete a project, holding it gleefully up for me to see and exclaiming, “Lookeeee! I made a BOOK!!!”

For Children and Teens

My workshops at libraries and schools center on basic bookmaking techniques with projects designed for delight and learning.  As I did in my many years of workshops with Think 360 Arts, sometimes I work with teachers to match book projects to curricular content (like “writing better dialogue” or “displaying knowledge of regions of the United States”).  Other times, I work together with presenters to come up with something that’s engaging, accessible, and just plain fun.  (Ever made a taco book?  You should try it!)

For Adults

My adult workshops can include instruction in bookbinding skills and in the construction of basic book forms; these are particularly useful to teachers who would like to include bookmaking in their classrooms.  I also teach creative book design, helping students to think outside what they already know about books and bookbinding to big ideas, innovative structures and alternative materials and processes.  More recently, I have also begun teaching workshops for creative artists in any medium on building a sustainable studio practice.

Post-pandemic, I have focused on small-group workshops and presentations.  To inquire about my rates and availability, please click on the “Contact” link below.
