About the Book:

Laundry examines a moment in a relationship: the pause following an outburst when the damage is surveyed and assessed.  The flag format was selected for this book so that this moment could be suspended in time, allowing for reflection while still retaining visual cohesion.  The use of worn bedsheets allows the book to feel familiar and comfortable, even when the moment is not.

About the Text:

Inspired in the moment, I wrote the text for this book while commuting to a university an hour away: one hand on the steering wheel, one hand using a pen to scribble while assiduously NOT looking at what I was writing.  I knew the format of the book would require short phrases and that the content would also be supported by terse text.  This was likely helped by my not being able to remember long paragraphs while I drove!

About the Materials and Processes:

Laundry is constructed as a flag book, a structure designed by book arts master Hedi Kyle that has been loved and utilized by many book artists.  The book is constructed from pieces of a used bedsheet mounted onto Arches Platine paper and pieces of a used pillowcase mounted onto mat board.  A piece of twill tape is used for a tie closure.   The font is Abadi MT Condensed; the text was digitally typeset, laser printed and transferred to the fabric surfaces using a xylene solvent.
